The Meandering Beas River near Dharmpur Kotli

The Beas Mystery – Meandering Path Between Mandi-Sujanpur | A Photo Journey

Where does the River Beas go from Mandi? It was a great mystery for me.

Finally, I figured out where does ‘The Beas’ disappear after Mandi. It follows the NH-70 route, the worst National Highway I have ever seen.

The Beas forms narrow valleys on this route; going as deep as 50 meters. A beautiful meandering pattern comes into the picture before the river mysteriously appears in Sujanpur/Sandhol where the river bed as wide as 80 meters at places.

River Beas originates in Himachal Pradesh. The point of origin is called ‘Beas Kund‘ located on the southern face of Rohtang Pass in Kullu district. River Beas forms a beautiful meandering pattern as it moves out of the Kullu district. I have seen the river entering the Mandi town. I have seen its entry point in district Hamirpur as well, near Sujanpur but I could never figure out its path between these two points, and that is close to 100 kilometers. UnFortunately I got a chance to ride on one of the worst National Highways of our state, the god forbidden NH-70.

As a matter of fact home of the Chief Minister of our state lies on this highway so he got this single half lane road approved as a National Highway. One half of the NH-70, between Mandi and Hamirpur, is literally ‘breathtaking’ and if you don’t pay due attention where it is required, you will definitely eat dust or test your lungs in the deep waters of River Beas.

Nevertheless, the landscape too is breathtaking, literally. River Beas runs along the NH-70 until Dharmpur and takes a dramatic turn towards Sandhol/Jaisinghpur. Dharmpur town looks like a young boy ready to jump in the water who is holding back just for the right moment.

The river takes a sudden dramatic turn and changes its path completely. It simply reverses its direction. Dharmpur Village is shown in the next photograph and it silently observes the away movement of river Beas from its shores. To me, it looked like as if a small child was ready to jump in the water and it just could not.

I wanted to see the NH-70 and I got the meandering paths of River Beas as added incentive. Not many people in my circle are aware of the path of River Beas in this region because the road is literally in a very bad shape and even the buses, trucks, and shepherds prefer State Highway over this road. There is no way this road could be termed a National Highway and that’s why not many people [in my circle] use this road, and hence they didn’t know about the meandering path of Beas in this region.

There are not many photographs but whatever  we managed to click are worth sharing.
