Good is Bad.Bad is Good

I am going to turn off the TV when that clock hand strikes 5, said the young lady to her five year old son, who was busy watching animated Ramayan on the cartoon network.

The little boy made an annoying face and fixed his eyes again on the TV screen.

His mother was a human rights activist, fighting against evil in the world, raising her voice against crimes on women, young children, and old people. She was writing a report for a seminar about how things have not changed with time. How education has not helped the cause at all and how religion has made no contributions either.

She looked at her son from the corner of her eyes and felt happy that he was watching Ramayan with interest. The mother asked her son about what was he thinking as he sat lost in his thoughts looking at the screen while commercials flooded the TV screen.

The kid jumped into her mother’s lap and asked her, “Who was Ravan?”

“Ravan was an evil being. He fought with Lord Ram and Lord Ram taught him a lesson by killing him.”, said the young lady.

“Mama, why was he bad?  Why was he not a good man?” asked the kid inquisitively and her mom was visibly not at ease as she was trying to find an answer to this question.

“Well, probably because he wanted more than he deserved. He was bad because he did not obey rules. You always have those bad kids in your prep school who fight with others, don’t you? Similarly, Ravan was bad too.”, and the mother wondered if her answer was valid and meaningful or not.

The young kid was lost in his thoughts.

What are you thinking son?
“Nothing, what if there was no Raavan? No one would have fought with anyone. No bad people around us. Lord Raam would have stayed peacefully with his wife. There would have been no fight in the Ramayan. I do not like people fighting with each other mom”, said the kid, staring at the screen.

The visuals on the screen showed Lord Raam coming back home after defeating Ravan in the battle. Ravan had died and Ramayan has come to an end, on the screen.
